Innovation

1. Choose your favourite page on Design for Change and write why this was your favourite.

In early 2009. Kiran Bir Sethi, launched her biggest initiative to date, a national campaign that encourages school children across India to participate in one-week project to change some aspect of life in their own communities. 32,274 schools across India participated in the " Design for Giving School Contest" and hundreds of thousands of school kids were involved.

The Bishop's Co-ED school was one of the school that made it's way to the submission. The Bishop's Co-ED School Pune had a big problem. Traffic is a big problem in the big city. The traffic is huge. The school has over 3000 children, and all of these children needs to be drop of to school in the morning.
The children in the school came up with a solution. The bigger kids in the school became " traffic patrols". They had the responsibility.

" We need to be the change, to get the change"

2. Write a reflection on this quote: 'In a time when there is hunger for innovation everywhere, we think our primary responsibility is to help prepare a generation of students to rise with the challenges of our times' (d.school)
How and why do you intend to create an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset in your pupils? Or why not?

I intend to develop children's ability to think innovatively and use their creativity and knowledge to come up with new methods to certain problems. Innovation is the development of new values through solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs in value adding new ways and new knowledge. However there is no requirement
for the new ways or new knowledge. Along the way, the students develop a process for reliably producing creative solutions to nearly any challenge.
By giving the children space for thinking new ideas and new ways, the children gets better to raise their voice in any situation. The children become safe, proficient users of making tools and materials in their way to discovering their passion and language of self expression. It gives the the students opportunities to embrace failure, frustration, tolerance, communication, collaboration, creativity and empathy.

I intend to help children to develop innovative mindset skills through hands-on, open-ended projects. It will give all children equal opportunities to be heard and to present their ideas. I intend to give the children ownership of their learning.

FEEL, IMAGINE, SUSTAIN, SHARE AND DO THE CHANGE

  1. Dear Andrea,
You intention to help children become creative is supported by your interest in the project Design for Change. As you write the simple I Can rather than Can I? is an important change in mindset in many schools.
    I like you butterfly model.
    Best,
    Lilian
